On March 29th, I plant violets in honor of my great-grandmother Violet Frances. Years ago, my mom thought how special it would be to honor her grandmother Violet by planting her favorite flower on her birthday. Since then, she has planted violets, violas, and pansies in her garden on March 29th, and I now do the same in my own garden. Being able to celebrate loved ones in small but significant ways with such thoughtfulness is one of my mom’s greatest gifts, and I am so blessed to be able to share in these acts of love and remembrance. I am a fourth generation Frances — Violet Frances, Barbara Frances, Beverly Frances, Breanna Frances. Sharing a name and the many traditions of celebrating life in our family remind me daily of the importance of small moments, of creating, of being thankful and joyful, of remembering. We think that Violet Frances would love that we remember her by spending the day in the garden.
Inspired by this annual tradition, I decided to bring the celebration indoors for a violet-infused afternoon of sweets and early spring blooms. An armful of fresh flowers, my favorite aubergine glass pieces, and an overly decorated cake seemed the perfect way to celebrate the day and toast the woman who has inspired such a special family tradition.
For me, gathering with loved ones is the most important part of any celebration.
A lemon chiffon cake with blackberry filling, and an overabundance of buttercream frosting, was the perfect slice of sweetness for the day.
